Children's House

A Foundation for Lifelong Learning

The Children’s House at The Montessori House is a rich and stimulating environment designed for children aged 2.5 to 6 years, where they take the next step toward independence, confidence, and a deep love for learning. This carefully prepared space encourages children to explore complex ideas, refine practical life skills, and develop early literacy and numeracy through hands-on learning.

Building on the experiences of the Infant Community, the Children’s House provides a more advanced work cycle, where children engage in practical life activities, sensorial exploration, mathematical concepts, language development, and cultural studies. Through structured routines and self-directed work, children develop the focus, resilience, and problem-solving skills that lay the foundation for future academic success.

What Happens in the Children’s House?

The Children’s House is designed to meet the needs of young learners, providing an organized, beautiful, and engaging space that supports concentration, independence, and social development. Each day follows a structured rhythm, allowing children to work at their own pace while learning valuable skills in a nurturing, respectful environment.

  • The Montessori Work Cycle – A dedicated time where children engage in:
    • Practical Life Activities – More advanced tasks like washing clothes, scrubbing furniture, sweeping, polishing, and caring for plants.
    • Sensorial Materials – Refining the senses through graded activities that enhance perception, coordination, and problem-solving.
    • Mathematical Exploration – Hands-on materials introduce counting, number recognition, basic operations, and patterns.
    • Language & Literacy – Early phonics, storytelling, writing practice, and introduction to reading.
    • Cultural Studies – Puzzle maps, globes, geography lessons, and discussions about the wider world.
  • Building Community & Social Skills (Grace and courtesy groups)– Children collaborate, take turns, and engage in group discussions, fostering kindness, respect, and teamwork.
  • Mealtime as a Social Experience – A structured time where children use real plates and cups, serve themselves, clean up spills, wipe tables, and care for their space. After meals, they wipe their faces and practice personal hygiene.
  • Outdoor Play & Movement – Children develop gross motor skills, balance, and coordination through climbing, running, and nature-based activities.
  • Afternoon Group Activities – Covering a variety of subjects to spark curiosity and creativity:
    • Science Experiments – Hands-on investigations into cause and effect.
    • Art & Creativity – Exploring different materials, techniques, and personal expression.
    • Music & Movement – Developing rhythm, coordination, and appreciation for music.
    • Exploring the World – Learning about cultures, geography, and nature.
    • Language & Communication Games – Strengthening verbal skills, storytelling, and expressive language.
