Infant Community

A World of Exploration and Independence

The Infant Community at The Montessori House is a carefully prepared environment for children aged 18 months to 2.5 years, where curiosity, independence, and social development take center stage. This nurturing space provides young children with the freedom to explore, discover, and develop essential life skills in a supportive and engaging atmosphere.

Inspired by Montessori principles, the Infant Community encourages children to engage in meaningful work, build strong relationships, and develop the confidence to care for themselves and their environment. Through hands-on learning, social interaction, and structured routines, children begin to develop a sense of order, responsibility, and joy in everyday activities.

What Happens in the Infant Community?

This room is thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of active, inquisitive toddlers as they take their first steps toward independence and self-care. A structured yet flexible daily routine ensures that each child feels secure, engaged, and encouraged to explore.

  • Morning Welcome & Exploration – Children arrive and begin their day with free exploration, choosing from a variety of Montessori materials designed to support fine motor skills, coordination, and problem-solving.
  • The Montessori Work Cycle – A dedicated period where children engage in practical life activities such as pouring, sweeping, dressing frames, scrubbing as well as sensorial materials that refine touch, sight, sound, and movement.
  • Building Community & Social Skills – Children learn to share, take turns, and work together, fostering kindness, empathy, and cooperation in a mixed-age setting.
  • Mealtime as a Social Experience – A key part of the day, where children sit together, use real plates and cups, and practice independence by serving themselves, cleaning up spills, and wiping tables. After meals, they wipe their faces, reinforcing self-care skills.
  • Outdoor Play & Movement – A daily opportunity for children to run, climb, balance, and explore nature, developing gross motor skills and a love for the outdoors.
  • Afternoon Group Activities – A time for creative and intellectual engagement, with rotating themes covering:
    • Science Experiments – Simple, hands-on investigations that spark curiosity.
    • Art & Creativity – Exploring colours, textures, and imaginative expression.
    • Music & Movement – Singing, dancing, and rhythm games that support coordination.
    • Exploring the World – Learning about nature, geography, and different cultures.
    • Language & Communication Games – Expanding vocabulary and confidence in speech.
  • Calm Transitions & Home Time – The day winds down with gentle activities, ensuring children leave feeling happy, fulfilled, and eager to return.
